An Orgy of Niches
- by Kath Blackwell, with Raven from Sin-Text.com
How many thousands of frustrated adult content surfers are out there - angry and disappointed because there are no sites that properly cater to the specific interests and needs they are searching for?
How many of those surfers would be thrilled to join your member site - or any member site - that simply "gets it" and legitimately offers the type of content that they are having such a difficult time finding? You would be surprised how many communities of fetishists hang out in online chats and complain about the lack of representation for their interests - and the sites that ARE out there generally miss the mark, and word spreads quickly of the botched attempt.
Understanding a niche, in order to sell it properly and keep your members happy, requires research and usually some advice from either someone who lives the lifestyle, or someone who is a qualified expert on the psychology of niches. One such expert is Raven, of Sin-Text.com, an industry consultant who has helped many webmasters, companies and providers market their niche-based programs effectively. Raven has worked within many different areas of the industry, has researched dozens of specific niches, and has an uncanny knack for being able to get into the minds of her audience so to best determine and meet their wants, needs and inner desires.
One way to research a niche is to turn to the history book, dictionary or encyclopedia. You would be surprised at how much information can be garnered from some typical research methods. In this article we will use the orgy "niche" as an example of the many different opportunities and options to sell a specific category to your target audience.
Identify the Niche
The orgy as a niche itself is nothing new - but it is just gaining a huge popularity on the Internet as of late. Perhaps the most popular depiction of historical orgy is from the Greek-Roman era. "Historically, the Romans and Greeks held the corner on the market, when it came to orgiastic pleasures," explains Raven, "Renowned throughout the civilized world, men and women would gather in great rooms, feasting on delectable edibles and each other, often at the same time. Over indulgence was the order of the day. Vomiting a meal was considered part of etiquette, so as to clear the digestive tract in order to consume again. There were no rules. Every human orifice was considered open game, including men having sex with men, women having sex with women and every combination under the sun. Imaginations ran wild and all fantasies were indulged. The sexual acts themselves often included the bizarre, the 'over-the-top' kinky."
The history of the modern orgy is just as fascinating. According to Raven, "There used to be a place in New York, called Plato's Retreat, which catered to those who wanted to indulge in 'extreme' sex acts, with no barriers. There are still places that exist today, although orgies have pretty much gone underground, at least from a sanctioned viewpoint. Orgies have not gone away. They have joined the ranks of 'forbidden fruit' fantasies. Of course, one must factor in the social diseases our society faces as a reason for caution."
So what exactly would a true orgy experience be like? Raven says: "The orgy fantasy involves out-of-control sex, occurring with several partners, usually within the same room or house, taking most of the night, if not all-night. Orgies can last an entire weekend."
One of the elements that did not change since the time of the Romans is the inclusion of chemical or alcoholic enhancements. "This kind of sex is usually accompanied by liquor or drugs to enhance the experience," explains Raven, "To lower the inhibitions taught by societal rules and mores. Anything goes. There are no rules. Social barriers are left at the door." So it seems that our Hollywood-inspired fantasies of toga-clad men and women groping each other, fulfilling fantasy after fantasy are probably not that far off then from the real deal - the ultimate gluttonous experience.
Fortunately time has both improved upon and enhanced the orgy experience. Whether it was the AIDS crisis, years of safe-sex education or just an overall improvement in societal behaviors, the orgy has a new 21st Century feel and appeal. Online orgies are even available for the voyeur experience, where the surfer can pick and choose from a selection of participants and instruct them to do whatever he or she desires.
