An Orgy of Niches

Part 2: Understand the Appeal
They say that writers should write what they know - and I've even heard that webmasters should only build what they know - but with all of the information that is out there and available today, you should not be limited by your experiences, or lack thereof. Getting into the "mind" of the surfer is something we do for even the simplest of niches - we've all asked a friend to surf the site to see what he would click on. Researching a major niche - or even a micro-niche is pretty much the same thing, but can be very time consuming and mistakes can still be made. This is when hiring a niche expert can come in handy.
If orgies have been around since the time of the Greeks and the Romans - and most likely even before - why are they still so appealing today? Part of what makes a niche appealing to some people is the extreme to which the niche goes outside of normal societal expectations or limits. The orgy - for many reasons - definitely goes outside many of those boundaries.
"Society, as a whole, mostly condones monogamistic behavior and condemns that which doesn't conform to the modern mores of a civilized society," points out Raven. "Many of us grow up, having been taught by home and church, to have sex only under certain stringent guidelines.
Most cultures and religions have a well-defined base of what is sexually acceptable and what is not."
"Socially, in this day and age, there are many that cannot get a single date, let alone be invited to an orgy. Our society, with its mass transportation, mass communication, has ironically become increasingly isolated. The computer has given the lonely, the rejected, the unwelcome and the curious a huge opportunity to play out their fantasies. Even though the fantasy will most likely never come true, the orgy Web site provides a visual outlet for those who will never experience what they dream about."
"Much of what men and women fantasize about has to do with sexually 'impolite,' 'unacceptable' acts, such as orgies. By its very definition, orgy is about excess, giving up control, lack of moderation, and no inhibition sexual frenzy. There is something very sexually appealing about entering a room filled with naked bodies. Permission to have sex is granted. Overindulgence is expected."
Once again it is the taboo - the forbidden fruit - that attracts people to the niche, like moths to a flame. Sometimes, the more extreme or socially 'unacceptable' the behavior, the more the overall appeal.
Explore Alternate Niche Routes
Today's webmaster needs to look beyond the initial niche and explore the world of the micro-niche. Micro-niches are more specific interests within the original niche. A very basic example would be that if a guy likes blondes - you can get more specific and explore big-breasted blondes, big-breasted bi-sexual blondes or get more detailed and go with big-breasted bi-sexual blondes with piercings. Every niche can have multiple offshoots or micro-niches. Identify these micro-niches or alternate niches that compliment or generally appeal to those who have an interest in the main, "base" niche.
One example of a related niche or interest within the orgy niche is "control" - or more specifically a lack of control. Because of the total abandonment of society's limits, orgies can be the perfect release for individuals who just want to lose that control and give in to a total unrestrained sexual experience.
"Males and females have issues with control," explains Raven, "Most civilized societies, especially those with strong religious ties, teach restraint. Guilt and familial expectation tend to cause conflict. Giving up that control to indulge in animalistic, uncontrolled sex is often a fantasy, never to be realized. Web sites that promote orgies offer a release to many that dream about sexual excesses. Presented properly, from a marketing standpoint, orgy sites should do very well, especially if the site capitalizes on the notion that most men and women will never experience what is now considered sexual deviancy."
"With an orgy, both sexes are on the same level. She wants to lose herself in several men as much as he wants to lose himself inside several women. There are no taboos. Often, with real life orgies, men are doing men and women are doing women."
But is the appeal of the orgy site strong enough to stand on its own without having to look for the micro-niche target for additional traffic? "Personally, I think orgies stand by themselves. The niche is about lack of control, not one gender controlling the other. That's a whole different niche. Threesome sites are more about the appeal of two women on one man or vice versa. Facial/bukkake sites are also about men controlling the woman. The same applies to gangbang sites, where she is getting 'it,' rather than everyone mixed into the fray. Swingers tend to have sex with various partners and may even have parties to this extreme, which would play well with orgy sites."
