Is Porn Becoming a Young Adult's Playground?
By Jan (undermyspell) for RatedHot.com
During the birth of the adult Internet industry the prime players developing programs were young, educated technical wizards. Although there were a few salty aged business gurus, the overwhelming majority appeared to have youth on their side.
Ten years down the road those experienced pioneers are a decade older and millions richer, yet there seems to be a vast network of young entrepreneurs breaking into the adult sector daily.
Perhaps, one of the reasons that the young upstarts are infiltrating the tightly knit community of pornographers is that education in computer technology is standard and commonplace now. Money and equipment is more readily available to the younger set via their yuppie parents. They are learning more at a younger age than in the good ole days. Technology has also evolved to the point where they are able to create products and sites and participate as webmasters without in-depth knowledge of many of the technical aspects of the business. To these youngsters, who see the specials on television documenting the money and power of people such as Hugh Hefner and Joe Fredricks, the Internet seems like the perfect place to capitalize on the world's desire for porn. The ability to create illegal or shady techniques for bilking people of their hard earned cash has also lent a hand in this surge of youthful contenders. They all want their piece of the porn industry without wading through the trenches as the pioneers did ten years ago. The originators of the adult Internet industry did such an exemplary job and created such impressive tools and programs that it paved the way for literally anyone to eek out a living working on the computer.
Although some of our best products have come from the new kids on the block, perhaps they should have come up through the ranks just so they could learn proper business ethics and conduct. The younger crowd of webmasters tends to forget the cardinal rule of retail that is, "The Customer Can Make or Break You." By forgetting this and trudging ahead with sketchy business practices or poor customer support, they cast a shadow on the industry that can be tough to clear. By all means though, it is not just the young or new webmasters committing these atrocities. There are a handful of seasoned vets that throw their hat in the ring from time to time. Considering today's spotlight on the adult industry from various factions, world governments and organizations determined to break the attraction adult online erotica holds for so people, they should tread a little lighter to stave off these efforts to squash our livelihood.
The shift to what is perceived as a younger customer base comes from two sources. There is the fact that the baby boomers' children are now coming of age. You should also consider that money is more prevalent and available to them, as the average household salary has increased, and parents are able to provide their college aged kids with credit cards and hefty living allowances. The stigma that was once attached to porn is not as dominant as it once was either.
Another reason for the shift in customer base demographics may tie into the surge of younger webmasters. Younger webmasters tend to market to an audience they are comfortable with and can relate to. Therefore, they will create and market products to their peers. It is very difficult for a young webmaster to imagine older people enjoying anything sexual. because it draws attention to the fact that their own parents are sexually active. This is a difficult subject for any child to envision - their own parents in any kind of intimate setting…
Although we may see a shift to a younger targeted audience, do not forget that your older crowd is the most stable and predictable form of revenue. They have power purchasing ability, and generally, when they find something they appreciate or like, they will remain loyal to it.
