October 10, 2008 - Digg, a content sharing and recommendation website, is going to start to expand internationally (outside of the United States) beginning next year.

The site began in 2004 and since then has been replicated worldwide, such as www.meneame.net in Spain (which roughly translates into “shake me”).

Until now, Digg has been a service catering exclusively to the United States, even though approximately 45% of its traffic originates from other countries. The company has just received a new capital injection of 28.7 million dollars (approximately 20.9 million Euros) that will be utilized to expand into Europe and Asia.

"The company will focus on countries where their 'local competititors' have been successful," confessed its founder Kevin Rose to The Times.

“There are other sites out there and we're looking at how successful they are,” assured Rose, who calculates that Digg will begin to launch their own sites by the end of 2009. Spain, as well as Germany and Japan, are among their primary target markets.
