How long have you been working in the adult Internet industry?
I officially started in the adult business in 1999, but had a non-adult site prior to that. I decided I would try the Adult industry once I discovered what the potential was.
What kind of work did you do before you got into adult and how did it help or prepare you for what you do now?
Prior to getting involved in adult I was in the antique and estate jewelry business. This is what I had my non-adult website for, so I had a bit of experience in dealing with web sites - little did I know what was in store for me. A friend introduced me to the idea of adult, because of this prior experience with my mainstream site. It wasn't a big deal to put together another site after getting through the initial learning curve with the first one.
Can you give our readers a little peek into the "real" JFK? What are your hobbies, thingst that you are interested in outside the business?
I am older than a lot of the young 'uns in the industry, but I have been successful in several other business ventures before this. I just love the idea of selling something intangible - like images on the 'Net. I don't really have any hobbies - mostly I just work. Because I do what I enjoy, it doesn't really seem like a job. I love riding motorcycles, even after I had a deer get in my way this summer. That laid me up for awhile. But I've made the first step toward getting back in the saddle; I bought new riding gloves.
Can you tell us about FUBAR Webmasters?
F.U.B.A.R. (www.fubarwebmasters.com) started out as a hobby. I started to go to webmasters events, to garner more knowledge about the industry and to increase my success at it. The first event I attended was the Montreal Web Expo, and I had my first digital camera then. I started to take pictures of the event for my own amusement just to remember what the parties and events were like. I was really impressed by the first party at the Hard Rock Cafe in Montreal, and I thought "I love this, when is the next one?"
I started to hit more industry events and the collection of pictures just grew. After a while I thought I should share these with fellow webmasters, some of whom can't make it to the shows. So many others were having too much fun to take pictures, but everyone always wants to see what went on. So F.U.B.A.R. was born. I chose the name because to me it represented the goings on at some of the events. There were others before me with similar ideas, but none have kept it up to the same extent that I have. Last Year I attended events in the US, Mexico, Jamaica, Several in Europe - it's a labor of love! At this point we have the largest collection of photos from webmaster events - bar none.
What changes have you seen happen in the industry since you began, and do you think those changes have been helpful or hurtful to business?
The industry evolved to a more business-like way. A lot of the early hustlers are not to be seen today. The best way to describe it is that it has matured, there are a lot more trustworthy businessmen running things now. I know there are a few exceptions still, but the thing is you can't pay $100 per sign up and expect to stay in business for long. I feel in the long term, the weeding out process will be beneficial to the industry as a whole. When all is said and done, all of the glamour and parties aside - this is still a business.
