Tip #30: Don't Be a Banner Farm
Lots of webmasters who are trying to make money online develop sites which are 'banner farms' just pages of paid links, on the assumption that more paid links are likely to make more money.
In reality, the reverse is true:
- Most surfers will try and exit banner farms as quickly as possible (don't you?)
- they certainly wouldn't come back or tell their friends.
- Having too many sponsors for a low traffic site is a quick route to never getting paid
- almost all sponsors have minimum earnings before they send a check - and a site with a lot of sponsors may earn a few dollars on each program, but never reach the minimum commission on any program.
The most successful sites are generally those that:
- Provide original or unique content.
- Attract regular (and new) visitors as result of that content.
- Have a consistent subject and theme (the definitive site on a particular subject).
- Primarily use sponsors which relate to the theme of the site, or better yet enhance it.
