Tip #50: Bad, Nasty Counters
With the recent sale of a very popular counter and the turn of events that have followed, I have seen people talking about moving to a different counter.
I have been told in confidence by a large counter owner that they have been doing the same thing with their counter but with much more stealth. And, they have been doing it for a couple of years.
Any TGP or Link List owner knows, the least amount of traffic they receive is from the small recip banners placed on sites and pages. So, how do counters survive without getting a lot of traffic from their counters themselves? I understand that there is money advertising banners in the webmaster area but, is that really enough for them to survive?
My opinion is this...
Trust no free counter. They not only have access to all of your webmasters but also all surfers that visit your site or page. Almost all counter programmers have the ability to write something within their code that you and your customers will not want on their machines. Not all of them do it but, at any time, they can.
Do yourself a favor. Get some usable server stats from your logs and leave the 3rd party counters alone. Not only is there always a chance that some viscous code may be installed but it is also a leak on your our pages that you can do without. Server stats are more accurate and tell you more information than you will ever get from 3rd. party counters.
