Tip #58: Bandwidth Saving by Design - Part 2

Every picture costs you money
Fine. Your gallery page is now a bit leaner, and still gets the meaning over to the surfer. You submit it to all the big players, and you strike it lucky. The top five or six TGPs have accepted it and you can expect nearly half a million hits. Wow! Christmas come early.
You have twenty thumbs and twenty full size images. The thumbs are 6-8kb each, and the big pictures are about 100kb a piece. That's over two megabytes of images. Multiply that by the half million visitors and you get the biggest bill you ever saw for bandwidth overage.
Would fifteen pictures do as well? That saves you about 25%. Making your thumbnails a bit smaller would help a little. Your big images are way too big. If they are 800x600, you could resize them to 640x480 or some such. Besides resizing, proper compression will give you additional savings. Depending on how well or poorly the originals have been compressed, you could save 30-50%. Perhaps more. Then you might even consider resolution. Being only an advertisement for your wares it may not need to be a crisp 'top quality' image.
One handy piece of freeware is available for this purpose. It is very simple to use, and I can personally recommend it for JPG images. The name is Easy Thumbs. You can get a copy at:

No doubt that images are the largest bandwidth burner. Flashy, multi-layered GIFs probably more than most. Something sized 250x250 with four or five layers may look really swish, but it can weigh in at over 40 or 50kb a go. Don't be tempted unless you have deep pockets.
