Tip #60: Intro to Stats
by Gel of Submitter's Realm

As an adult webmaster you are constantly being bombarded by different stats. It might be other webmasters talking about their productivity. Often it's sponsor trying to convince you that their program is the best. In this article I want to discuss the three most common statistics.

Conversion Ratio
This is the most common statistic you will see references to. It's also one of the most misleading. Conversion Ratio is a ratio of the number of sales over the number of clicks through to your sponsor. 1/100, 1/768, 1/1500, etc. The problem with using Conversion Ratios as benchmarks is that different sponsors count incoming clicks differently. Some will count first page raw others only count 2 nd page unique's. With the same number of actual click throughs from your page that later will appear to have a better conversion ratio.

Click Through Ratio (CTR)
Click through ratio measures the number of click throughs to your sponsor for a number of views of your site. It is displayed as a percentage. 1%, 2.5%, 15% etc. This ratio suffers from the same problems as the Conversion Ratios.

Visitor Per Sale
This statistic is a measure of the number sales over the number of visitors to your site. Sales per visitor is displayed as a fraction of 1 sale over the number of visitors 1/5000, 1/34,000, 1/75,000 etc This probably the best ratio to use to measure the effectiveness of your pages. It is not affected by the way the sponsor counts click. For straight TGP gallery traffic you will see numbers around 1/20,000 to 1/75,000. For freesite traffic you can expect 1/5000 to 1/20,000. Gay traffic from those same sources will usually have better ratios.

For the above reasons stated conversion ration and click through ratio are of limited use when comparing one sponsor to another. They are useful for comparing results within the same sponsorship program, or comparing sponsors using the same stats and billing system - for example, CCBill sponsors. They are very useful for comparing different gallery or freesite designs.

In the end though it is best to benchmark yourself using the Visitor Per Sale statistic. It is useful for comparing one sponsor to another.
